Marty Henson used a hole-in-one on the fourth hole of the final round to help him win his first Southern Oaks Open.

Henson used an 8-iron on the 147 yard hole to make the ace.

It turned out that was the difference between Henson’s two day total of 144 and the second place finish of Woods Little who shot a 146 total.

“I had a lot of chances in the final round,” said Henson. “I was hitting my irons great, but I just wasn’t making any putts. I must have missed three of four five footers,” he said.

Henson had to pass five golfers to get into the lead. Mike Hartin had set the pace in the first round with a 5-under par 67. However, in the second round Hartin had difficulty finding the hole.

“I played really well yesterday, but nothing seemed to work today,” said Hartin. “I was four over at the turn and it didn’t get any better,” he said.

Henson had to make a par save on the final hole to wrap up the win. His tee shot found the woods and he had to punch out to the fairway. He was able to get to the green and two putt for a par and save the win.

“I was pretty lucky I could save a par. When I pulled that drive I knew I was in some trouble,” he said.

Henson’s ace was his fifth career hole-in-one.

Hartin and Spartanburg golfer Brad Sill finished with a 147 total in a tie for third place. Zach Durham posted a 149 total for fifth place.

The Southern Oaks Open has always included a fishing tournament for the golfers in the ponds around the course. This year a pair of golfers had two good size catches.

Rick Oyervides caught the biggest fish when he pulled in a 5lb 13 ounce bass from the pond near the third hole.

“There were some pretty big fish out there,” he said. “I used a brown worm to get mine,” said Oyervides.

Second place in the fishing tournament went to Michael Haney who caught a  5 pound 5 ounce bass.

Flight winners in the Southern Oaks Open included, Second Flight – Michael Jordan, Third Flight – Phil Whitlock.
