Phillips wraps up SCJGA Player of the Year honors

Phillips Trent copy WTrent Phillips of Inman wrapped up a terrific junior golf season with a victory at the SCJGA Players Championship. The victory locked up the SCGA Jay Haas boys player of the year award for the Boiling Springs High School golfer.

Phillips, who has won back to back SC AAAA high school individual championships, won the Players title by three shots over his brother Trent.

The victory gives Phillips the points title in the year long race for the Player of the Year award. He held the lead in the rankings and the two closest players in the standings finished behind him at Hartsville.

The final points standings will be posted later this week, but Phillips will be ahead of SCGA Junior champion Christian Salzer of Sumter and his brother Trevor.

Phillips Trent Bennett WDuring the season Phillips not only won the state AAAA high school individual title, but also the Grant Bennet championship. He earned second place finishes at the Transou and a third place finish at the Bobby Chapman.

He qualified for and made the round of 32 at the US Junior Amateur. When he led the first round of the SCGA Amateur at Chanticleer last July he became the youngest player ever to lead the championship.

Phillips will receive the Player of the Year award from Jay Haas later this year in a presentation at Thornblade Club in Greer.
