Clemson won their fourth straight tournament with a win at Furman. The Tiger team included, Austin Langdale, Bryson Nimmer, Assistant Coach Jordan Byrd and his son, Carson Young, Head Coach Larry Penley, William Nottingham, Doc Redman and Josh Fickes.

The Clemson Tigers won their fourth straight tournament claiming a convincing win at the Furman Intercollegiate. The victory at Furman was also the fourth win in the tournament for Clemson. The Tigers also won the event in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

Larry Penley’s Tigers have now won five tournaments this season.

When the Tigers won at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate at the Palmetto Club in Aiken they set a new record for consecutive tournament wins for the program. The win at Furman set another record and gave the Tigers their fifth tournament win this year.

“I think we are playing relaxed,” said Clemson head coach Larry Penley. “They went out and had fun and just played,” said the Tigers coach who picked up his 73rd coaching victory.

Carson Young shot a final round 67 to match his career low score and win at Furman.

At Furman the Tigers not only won the team event, but senior Carson Young got his first college victory. During his amateur golfing career the Pendleton native has won a pair of SCGA State Amateurs and a CGA Carolinas Amateur along with major junior titles in the Sage Valley Junior Invitational and the Bobby Chapman Junior in Spartanburg.

However, it took until his final year to notch a college victory.

“I just kept on grinding and kept believing in myself,” said Young. “It is great to finally get the win,” he said.

Young was locked in a battle with old foe Andrew Novak from Wofford and Chattanooga’s Wes Gosselin. Young started the day trailing Novak by five shots and tied with Wes Gosselin of Chattanooga.

Gosselin shot past the Wofford golfer with a 4-under par 32 on the front nine to take the lead while Young stayed within two shots of the new leader.

Young, playing in the same group with Gosselin, made his move on the back nine. He carded a chip in birdie on the fourteenth hole and added his third eagle of the tournament on the fifteenth hole to pull within a shot of Gosselin.

On the seventeenth hole Young rolled in a 15 foot birdie putt while the Chattanooga golfer bogeyed the hole giving Young a one shot lead going to the final hole.

Carson Young claimed a one shot victory to earn medalist honors at the Furman Intercollegiate.

Young survived a miss hit off the tee and landed his second shot within 20 feet of the pin on 18.

“I was told when I was in the fairway that I had a one shot lead, so I knew I could two putt and win. I just rolled it up close and took the par,” he added.

Novak and Gosselin finished in a tie for second place. The Tigers placed two golfers in the top-ten with Doc Redman shooting 8-under par for a fourth place finish at Bryson Nimmer finished at 7-under par in a tie for fifth place.

“It’s cool to finally win one in college.  Hopefully as a team we can win five in a row. We want to keep it going,” added Young.

Now with five tournament wins during the season Penley wants his team to keep working for the biggest tournaments of the year.

“Right now the ACC is what we are focusing on. We have a lot of work to do. We have a chance to be a really good team and I guess that is how you win four in a row,” concluded Penley.

USC Aiken finished in second place at the Furman Intercollegiate.

Clemson finished the tournament at 29-under par at 835. USC Aiken ws in second place at 849 followed by Chattanooga, Georgia Southern and Wofford.

The Tigers will next play in their own tournament the Clemson Invitational starting on Aprils 7. The tournament will be played at The Cliffs at Keowee Falls and is open to the public.
