Brad Sill of Spartanburg shot a final round 2-under par 70 to win the 40th GGO by a shot.

A quick thunderstorm took the golfers off the course in the closing holes of the 40th Greater Greer Open, but it didn’t affect the tournament leader.

The stop and start end to the final round didn’t seem to bother first round leader Brad Sill of Spartanburg.

He held off a rally by Derrick Oyervides of Greer to take the GGO championship by one shot.

“The rain didn’t change the way I was playing,” said the first time GGO Champion. “I made a bunch of birdies before the rain and made one more after we got back on the course to be at six-under par,” he said.

The one more birdie he made was on the 16th hole. It helped Sill stay close to Oyervides, who had gotten to seven-under par for the tournament.

Playing in the group in front of the first round leader, Oyervides trailed Sill by four shots. An even par opening round of 72 meant he had to make up some ground.

“I had some trouble on 18 yesterday (Saturday) or I would have been a little closer, but I had a terrible finish today (Sunday). There were about four or five shots I would like to do over,” said Oyervides.

While Sill finished up his final three holes with a birdie and two pars. Oyervides bogeyed the difficult par-3 17th and then had trap troubles on 18 to card another bogey.

Derek Oyervides shot a final round 5-under par 67, but a pair of late bogeys cost him the GGO championship.

“I had gotten to seven under before those last two holes. I messed up a little wedge from about 40 yards out and that was it” he said.

Sill made routine pars on the 17th and 18th holes. While Oyervides shot the best round of the tournament posting a 5-under par 67 in the final round, it was not enough.

Sill’s two-under par 70 along with his opening round 68 was was good enough for a one-shot  win.

“Last year I lost to Doug Ramey who had a sensational final round. I shot six under to finish second and this year it was good enough for the win,” said the GGO champion.

The former Dorman and USC Upstate standout had to work for his under par round. He made 12 birdies in the two days, but he also had a bunch of bogeys too.

“I started the final round with a couple of birdies, but then I made some bogeys. I would get those back and then I made a few more bogeys. It was a real roller coaster ride all day.

Third place went to Ryan Lynn who finished with a four-under par 140 total. Brandon Coggins of Gaffney finished fourth at 141.

Eddie Powell won the GGO Senior title for the second year in a row.

Flight winners included First Flight – Tadd Gosnell, Second Flight – Luke Scott.

The Senior Division championship was by Eddie Powell. It was his second straight senior championship, Powell finished well ahead of Ken Ball and Kenneth Moore.
