The Gamecocks feel right at home playing the historic Camden Country Club course and it shows on the leader board.

The USC team shot a second round 269 total to go from one stroke down after the first round to an 11 shot lead after 36 holes at the Camden Collegiate Invitational.

“Its Camden. It played pretty tough and tricky this morning,” said Gamecock coach Bill McDonald. “I think the local knowledge and understanding the pins in the second round they were a little more aggressive and we made some birdies which was helpful,” he said.

The Gamecocks were led by former champion Keenan Huskey and sophomore Caleb Proveaux. The two Gamecock golfers finished with 136 totals for the first two rounds and are tied for second place.

Shota Ozaki of James Madison has the individual lead by one shot after shooting rounds of 69 and 66 for a 135 total.

Caleb Proveaux shot his best career tournament round carding a 5-under 66 to be on shot off the lead going into the final round.

Proveaux set a new career low with his second round 5-under par 66 for a two round total of 136. Huskey won the tournament as a sophomore in 2015 and finished second last year. He shot rounds of 69 and 67 for his 136 total.

Elon is third with Francis Marion in fourth place and USC Aiken in fifth going into the final round on Sunday.

The Gamecocks have played three solid tournaments with their fourth place finish at the Jackrabbit the best showing so far this year.

“We’ve had three pretty solid tournaments overall. I think we are a talented bunch and they have worked really hard. I think we are better than we have looked at times this year,” he said.

McDonald would like to see his team come out and take charge in the final round and claim a victory.

“I’m hoping this week we can gain a little confidence and we can come out tomorrow (Sunday) and put another good round together,” said McDonald.

CLEMSON NOW TENTH AT GOLF CLUB OF GEORGIA COLLEGIATE

Freshman Kyle Cottam made six birdies and no bogeys to post a career best 6-under par 66 and help Clemson move up to 10th at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate.

Cottam is fourth in the individual standings trailing tournament leader Alex Smalley of Duke by four shots.

Clemson’s Bryson Nimmer helped Clemson move up to 10th place at the Country Club of Georgia Collegiate.

Doc Redman and Bryson Nimmer are tied for 39th with 143 totals for the first two rounds.

Wake Forest has the tournament lead at 23-under par after shooting a 17 under par team total in the second round.

The 15 team field includes 8 top-25 teams.
