The Limestone Saints got soaked in the third round of the Southern Tides Classic, but didn’t mind too much. The final round of the Southern Tide Classic at Green Valley Country Club was washed out and left the Saints on top of the standings.

The Saints held a two-shot lead over North Greenville after the first two rounds. Even though most teams did get in another nine holes before being pulled off the course, scores reverted back to the last completed 18 hole round.

“We got nine holes in, but it was pretty wet,” said Limestone golf coach Zack Siefert. “We would have liked to get it in, but the course was unplayable,” he said.

After drying out the Saints celebrated their second victory of the year at the Krispy Creme in Greenville.

Hot donuts or milk shakes are the reward for good play by the Saints.

“When we win the guys say the light is on (referring to the Krispy Creme Hot donuts sign). It is hard to win golf tournaments so when we do, we either have donuts or milk shakes to celebrate,” said Siefert.

The Saints shot rounds of 290 and 282 for a 572 total to give the seventh ranked NCAA Division II team the win. The Saints B team played in the tournament and finished in fifth place.

“We were able to show some of the things we have been working on this year. We want to compete, be disciplined and hold our composure. Those are the things we needed to win this tournament and we will need if we want to win a conference and national championship,” said the coach.

With 10 golfers in the 15 team field the Saints placed eight golfers in the top 20 individuals.

Brett Krekorian was the top Saint in the field at 3-under par. Will Woodard and Zack Bishop tied for seventh shooting even par 144. Max Kalfjall and Zach Pritchett tied for 10th place at 1-over par.

Krekorian has a pair of fourth place finishes to go with his runner-up finish at Green Valley. Will Woodard finished second at a tournament in Alabama while Zack Pritchett was third in the same tournament.

“Everyone of our top five players can win golf tournaments. This is a great change from the way we used to be. Our recruiting has improved to the point that we have a really solid group of golfers,” said Seifert.

North Greenville’s Chase Fisher posted a 5-under par 67 in the final round to take individual honors.

The North Greenville team had the best team round of the tournament when they carded a 10-under par 278 total in the second round.

Siefert expects the win this week will help the team when they take on some of the best teams in the country at the Southeastern Intercollegiate in Valdosta, Georgia starting on March 11th.

“The teams we are going to have to play in the post season tournaments will be in the field. Our guys are really pumped up to play in the tournament,” said the coach.

While it is an important tournament the Limestone coach wants his players to concentrate on their own game and not on the other teams in the field.

“We are going to challenge ourselves to figure out how we can be the best team we can be,” concluded Siefert.
