Bryson Nimmer won the season opening Carpet Classic. He added a second individual championship to his resume with a win at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate.

Clemson’s Bryson Nimmer is one of 16 golfers chosen to participate in the first Walker Cup practice session beginning on December 14th.

Nimmer has had an outstanding start to his final year at Clemson.

The Tiger senior from Bluffton has won two tournaments. He opened the season with wins at The Farm in Dalton, Georgia and The Maui Jim Intercollegiate in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The two victories earned Nimmer a spot on the first Haskins Award Watch List. The Haskins Award is college golf’s version of the football Heisman Trophy.

Nimmer missed a third straight tournament win when he finished one shot out of the lead at the Nike Collegiate played at the famed Colonial Country Club in Dallas, Texas.

In the final two stroke play events of the fall, Nimmer posted a 7th place finish at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational to help the Tigers come within a shot of a team win.

He also contributed to a record setting team round at the Ka’anapali Classic in Hawaii. The Tigers shot an opening round 262 to break the school’s single round record. Nimmer posted a 4-under par 68 in the round.

Nimmer has been named to the Haskins Award Watch List and is is the 11th ranked college golfer in the Golfweek poll at the end of the Fall season.

The Golfweek Men’s Collegiate ranking has Nimmer 11th while he is 10th in the Golfstat Statistic Rankings.B

Being invited to the practice sessions does not make selection to the next Walker Cup team a certainty, usually about one-third of the invitees make the final squad.

However, this year a change in the selection process places more emphasis on World Amateur Golf Rankings and guarantee the US Amateur champion a place on the team.

“This practice session presents an excellent opportunity for the players, the captain and the USGA to become familiar with each other as we begin the process of team selection,” said John Bodenhamer, USGA senior managing director of championships.

Nathaniel Crosby, who played on the winning 1983 Walker Cup team, is the captain for this year’s team. The 47th biennial  matches will be played at Royal Liverpool Golf Club, Hoylake in September.

The practice session will be held at a yet to be determined location.

“While these 16 talented individuals represent the first pool of potential team members, we expect many others will be considered as the selection process moves toward its conclusion next August,” said Bodenhamer.

Recently two golfers with Palmetto State connections have been on Walker Cup teams. The 2016 US Amateur champion Doc Redman from Clemson was on the winning 2017 team and 5-time SCGA Player of the Year Todd White from Spartanburg was on the winning 2013 squad.
