The rain went away and the field at the South Carolina Golf Association Amateur championship was able to complete the second round and finish the third round to get the tournament back on schedule.

With all the scores from the two rounds completed on Saturday posted, Tyler Gray from Lugoff held a two-shot lead going into the final round.

Gray had to complete 11 holes of his second round early on Saturday. The Coastal Carolina golfer was 2-under par when he had to stop play on Friday and faced two challenging holes when he restarted Saturday morning.

“I started back on 17 and 18 which are two of the hardest holes on the course and I was one over,” he said. “When I got to the front nine I knew I was able to make a move and I did. I was happy with that,” said Gray.

Gray finished off his second round at 5-under par 66 to take a two shot lead into the third round.

College of Charleston golfer Logan Sowell was able to finish his second round on Friday.

He held the clubhouse lead  at 8-under par to start the third round. The Kershaw golfer, playing in the final group, shot a 3-under par 68, but fell to second place.

First round leader Aiken’s Jake Carter also dropped back after the third round. The FSU golfer and NC State golfer Christian Salzer from Sumter finished the round in a third place tie.

Salzer carded a 5-under par 66 in the third round while Carter came in with a 69.

Gray kept his momentum going from the completion of his second round by posting a third round 4-under par 67 for a two shot lead.

“I had another good round today, I had a couple of things go my way. I had a lucky chip in on number 5. It gave me a shot I shouldn’t have had, I really needed it,” said Gray.

The Chanticleer’s sophomore finished with only one bogey to stand at 13-under par.

After absorbing over 4 inches of rain on Thursday and another fair amount on Friday the Thornblade Club course was in great condition for Saturday’s play and the scores in the entire field showed it.

Thirty of the remaining 71 golfers, after the cut, posted red numbers in round three.

The best round three scores were turned in by Belmont Abbey golfer Connor Fahey and Clemson golfer Colby Patton. Fahey and Patton each shot a 6-under par 65 to move into a tie for eighth place with four other golfers.

While the majority of the leader board is composed of current college golfers a pair of Upstate mid-ams are within striking distance of the leaders.

Raymond Wooten from Clemson is tied for fifth after shooting a 4-under par 67.

SCGA 2019 Player of the Year Robert Lutomski matched Wooten’s 67 and is six shots back going into the final round.

The tournament will again use split tees with the lead group of Gray, Sowell and Salzer scheduled to tee off number one at 9:50 am.
