Todd in final 8 at US Senior Amateur

Walter Todd from Laurens has made the round of eight at the US Senior Amateur championship.

Todd won two matches on Tuesday to advance to a quarter final match against Bob Royak from Alpharetta, Georgia.

Todd earned his way into the round of 36 with a comeback win in his opening match. Todd trailed Don Whittemore from Temple Terrace, Florida 3 down going to the 14th hole.

The 2018 SCGA Senior Player of the Year won the next three holes to even the match. He earned the right to advance with a birdie on the 18th hole to win 1 Up.

His second match in the round of 32 was a like his first match. Todd trailed his opponent, Frank Vanna from Boxford, Massachusetts until the 15th hole.

He rallied to win the next three holes to take a 2&1 victory and advanced to play again on Tuesday afternoon.

In the Round of 16 match Todd took control early and held the lead through most of the match against Victor Minovich from Thornton, Colorado.

Todd built a 3-up lead by the 11th hole and closed out Minovich with a bogey on the 17th hole for a 3&1 victory.

Todd’s match against Royak is scheduled to tee off at 8am at the 12:45.

Also earning a spot in the final eight is former SCGA Senior Player of the Year Rick Cloninger who know lives in McDonough, Georgia.

Cloninger, who is the second highest seeded golfer remaining in the competition, will face Steve Harwell from Mooresville, North Carolina in his quarter-final match.
