Four college golfers from South Carolina have been invited to play in the US Amateur and more may be added before the championship next month.

Georgia All-American Trent Phillips from  Boiling Springs is joined by Clemson All-American Jacob Bridgeman, his Tiger teammate Turk Pettit and College of Charleston’s Logan Sowell will all be in the field at Bandon Dunes.

Phillips earned first team All-American honors in his second season at Georgia. He is ranked 39th in the World Golf Amateur Rankings.

During the last season Phillips won his first college tournament, earned All-SEC honors for the second time and had the lowest stroke average on the team.

Bridgman earned Honorable Mention All-American recognition in his second year at Clemson.

He finished the pandemic shortened season as the Tigers top golfer winning the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate at the Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken.

The Clemson golfer from Inman played in the US Amateur last year at Pinehurst. He missed making the match play field after losing a three-way playoff for the final spot.

Last week he finished 30th at the Southern Amateur in Texas.

Pettit will also be playing in his second US Amateur. The Tiger senior made match play at the 2017 US Amateur. He recently made the quarter-finals at the North-South Amateur in Pinehurst.

Sowell, a senior at Charleston, has won Colonial Conference honors and won a college tournament last year in Puerto Rico.

He recently finished as the runner-up in the CGA SC Match Play championship.

The Covid-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of US Amateur qualifying tournaments around the country. Instead the USGA offered invitations to golfers based on the World Golf Amateur Rankings and some special exemptions.

The field for the tournament will include 264 golfers, however many golfers from outside the United States may not be able to play.

The pandemic has caused a number of the top amateurs in the world to be unable to accept an invitation to compete because of travel issues.

Additional golfers may be selected to complete the field.

The US Amateur will be played at the Bandon Dunes Golf Club August 10th to the 16th.

Former Clemson All-American Corbin Mills won the 2011 USGA Public Links Championship at the course.
