Pam Prescott beat a good field and some difficult windy conditions to win the Carolinas Golf Association’s Senior Women’s championship.

The 36 hole tournament was played at Kiawah Island Resort’s Oak Point course.

Prescott entered the final round tied with Brenda Kuehn from Asheville. Both golfers had opened the championship with a 3-over par 75s.

Prescott birdied three holes on her first nine and broke out of the tie with Kuehn to take a 6-shot lead over the field by the turn.

But as good as the first nine holes were for Prescott, the start of the back nine was very different.

“When I got through nine, somebody said you’re six up and I just said, ‘No!’ As soon as she said that I went to No. 10 and doubled,” said Prescott. “Then I had two more bogeys right after that. You just don’t do that! I’m superstitious about that,” she said.

While Kuehn fell off the pace, Jayne Pardus from Mount Pleasant closed in on Prescott.

Birdies on number 11 and 14 got Pardus even with Prescott, but losing the lead snapped the Powdersville High School golf coach back on track.

“Jayne made a couple of birdies on the back and I told myself that I needed to get my act together,” said Prescott. “I held on at the end, but she (Pardus) was coming at me a little bit.,” she said.

Number 16 turned out to be the difference maker for the two golfers.

Pardus struggled off the tee, found a bunker and could not scramble back for a par, instead her bogey 5 and Prescott’s par put the Piedmont golfer back in the lead.

Prescott parred the last two holes to finish at 1-over par 73. Pardus matched her 73 but finished 1-shot behind the winner.

“This win means a lot to me. I am self-taught at a little public course and I work there part-time. I’m a high school golf coach and I never thought I would do anything like this,” said Prescott.

Kerry Rutan from Daniel Island also shot a 73 to move up to third place while Kuehn finished with a 77 to fall to fourth place.

Prescott had an outstanding summer on the course. In June she won the CGA Women’s Amateur Carolinas Division Championship.

She finished as the runner-up in the State Division at the Women’s South Carolina Golf Association’s Amateur and won her second Greenville County Ladies Championship in August.

“I love the competition and I love all of these women out here. They just give you a pat on the back when you do something good and they lift you up when you do something bad,” concluded Prescott.
