After spending most of the season chasing T.L. Hanna, Greenville finally moved in front Monday in the SCHSL Class 5A Division II state golf championship.
The Red Raiders opened the tournament at even par to take the first-round lead, holding a narrow advantage over Riverside (+1) entering the final round.
Gaffney remained within striking distance at +5, while longtime state power T.L. Hanna found itself trying to make up ground after an opening-round +9.
The tournament remains far from decided, but Greenville positioned itself well after the opening 18 holes as the Red Raiders look to finish off a season-long pursuit of the Yellow Jackets.
Individually, Lugoff-Elgin junior Hayden Haff grabbed the early lead at 3-under par.
Greenville freshman Thomas Demint was one shot back at 2-under, tied with Conway’s Dylan Roof heading into the final round.
The tight team race sets up a strong closing day with Greenville attempting to hold off Riverside and a group of experienced contenders still close enough to make a move.
And while Hanna has to climb over some people to keep their state championship streak alive, with two Junior Players of the Year, Erik Erkenkeuser and Bennett Scaletta both near the top of the individual leader board, if they get a little help the chase for another title is not impossible.
River Bluff Leads 5A Division I
River Bluff grabbed the opening-round lead in the SCHSL Class 5A Division I state championship after posting an even-par team score Monday.
James Island sits second at +4, followed by Lexington at +9.
Dorman remained within range at +14 entering the final round, while several teams still have an opportunity to climb the leaderboard with a strong second-day performance.
Ruth Back In Position For Historic Finish
Dorman senior Will Ruth kept his bid for a third straight state championship on track Monday in the Class 5A Division I tournament.
Ruth opened the championship at 4-under par and shares the individual lead with Lexington junior Jackson Penney entering the final round.
River Bluff senior Howard Vroon sits one shot back at 3-under as the individual race remains tightly packed heading into Tuesday.
A third consecutive state title would place Ruth in rare company in South Carolina high school golf and adds another layer of pressure to an already competitive final day.
Youth Movement Showing Up Across State Championships
Some of the biggest performances of the opening day came from younger players.
In Class 3A, Christ Church freshman Heyward Jennings fired a 4-under round to take the individual lead entering the final day.
Oceanside senior Blake Bocelli was one shot back at 3-under, while Silver Bluff freshman Tucker Goff remained in contention at even par.
The opening day leaderboards across multiple classifications featured underclassmen prominently, setting up an interesting final round Tuesday.
