Trinty and Greenville on top at the Southern Cross

The Southern Cross is the tournament every South Carolina high school team and golfer wants to win.

The event played at the historic Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken can be the highlight of the high school season even with state championship play coming up in the next couple of weeks,

It is also one of the very few events that includes both public and private schools in the field.

Trinity Collegiate School from Darlington has the first round lead, but not by much,

Greenville High School, led by the individual co-leader Hugh Faulkner, is just a shot back in second place going into the final round on Saturday.

Faulkner led the Red Raiders with an opening round 1-under par 70 to share the lead with Charles Cauthen from AC Flora in Columbia.

Five golfers share third place including Will Ruth from Dorman , Dylan Park from Wren , Teddy Dunn from Gray, Erik Erlenkeuser from Hanna and Drew Andrews from Trinity are just two-shots out of the lead after carding one-over par rounds of 71.

The format for the Southern Cross is a little different than most high school tournaments, In the Southern Cross teams of four golfers compete with the best three scores counting for the team total.

As a team Trinity shot a 9-over par round to lead Greenville at 10-over par.

There is only three shots separating the top six teams.

A shot behind Greenville in third place is a three way tie between Wren, Blue Ridge and Hilton Head Prep. South Carolina’s top ranked AAAA team Flora is at 12-over par in sixth place.

Tee times begin at 7:30 am at the Palmetto Golf Club,
