Chesnee High School has built its girls golf dynasty on experience and excellence — four straight state championships powered by players who earned All-Conference, Player of the Year, and All-State honors. The Eagles didn’t just show up at the state tournament each fall — they arrived expecting to win.

But the fifth championship was different.
This time, the moment belonged not to a senior with a résumé full of awards, but to a 14-year-old freshman in her first varsity season — a player suddenly carrying the team’s fate on her shoulders.

The setting was the final hole at the Chester Country Club,

On this day, it did the opposite.

With Chesnee and Atlantic Collegiate tied for the team lead, freshman Amelia Shields faced a long forced carry over the water, the state championship hanging in the balance. She pulled a five-wood, struck it pure, and sent it soaring safely onto the green — the biggest shot of her young life. Moments later, she two-putted for par, sealing Chesnee’s fifth consecutive state title.

Rally and Finish

The Eagles had trailed by 14 shots entering the back nine but clawed back with their trademark grit. Senior Jada Flynn led the charge with a career-best 71, while Abby Hampton and Shields delivered clutch pars down the stretch to pull Chesnee even. Flynn finished second individually, earning All-State honors alongside Hampton and Shields.

“They buy into grinding and giving their best on every shot,” said Coach Kyle Scruggs. “They really want to win for each other. This bunch has heart.” Chesnee wins

A Dynasty Built on Culture

The victory extends what has become a mini-dynasty for Chesnee, one rooted in standards as much as skill. Over the past five years, Scruggs’ program has sent six players on to college golf and consistently reloaded rather than rebuilt.

“It’s their work ethic,” Scruggs said. “We’ve lost six players in the last two years, but the next group just steps in. They’ve been around good golfers and they know the path to get there.”

Shields, whose older sister Olivia played collegiately at USC Upstate, is the latest in a line of family names to contribute to Chesnee’s success — proof that the Eagles’ golf culture continues to grow from within.

Community and Character

When the team bus rolled back into the Chesnee lot that evening, families and community members were waiting, greeting the champions with cheers, hugs, and photos.

Scruggs also praised Atlantic’s players for their sportsmanship and faith.
“They’re a great group,” he said. “They even came over and did a Bible study with our kids before the tournament. It was a classy competition all the way around.”chesnee wins

Looking Ahead

Next season brings uncertainty but also optimism.
“Atlantic’s returning just about everybody,” Scruggs said, “and we’ve got a lot of young talent. We’ll give it our best shot again.”

Given Chesnee’s history, no one will bet against them.
