Mercier wins playoff at Chanticleer Senior

The Chanticleer National Senior Invitational needed three extra holes to determine a champion in the fifth annual event at The Greenville Country Club.

Three golfers were tied for the lead going into the final round and two of those three took control of the tournament on the final nine holes.

Mike Mercier of Rochester, NY built a two shot lead over former champion Rick Cloninger of Fort Mill.

Cloninger was able to birdie the last two holes to force a playoff with Mercier.

It took three holes before the tournament title would be decided. Mercier made the green with his third shot on the par-5 third hole while Cloninger’s approach came up short and landed in the water.

Mercier was able to make a two-putt par to claim the win. It was the second straight week the 57 year old banker was able to notch a win.

Former Champion Rick Cloninger of Fort Mill rallied to force a playoff, but lost out on the third extra hole at the Chanticleer National Senior Invitational.

Defending champion Steve Sharpe of Greensboro finished in third place while Greenville Country Club member Matt Grandy was the highest local finisher taking ninth place.

The Super-Senior championship was won by Bob Desjardins of Matthews, NC. Desjardins finished a shot in front of David Crocker from Bluffton.

The Grand Masters champion was Don Wood of Louisville, Kentucky.
