Steve Liebler made it look pretty easy on the toughest finishing hole in the Upstate. The Irmo golfer cozied his second shot, a 4-hybrid, up to about 8 feet from the pin on the par-4 452 yard hole.
Liebler made the birdie putt to give him and his partner Levi Joyner from Prosperity the win at the Musgrove Mill Invitational.
“That was as good as I got,” Liebler said about the shot that set up the winning birdie putt. “I didn’t know what we needed to win, but I couldn’t have done any better if I did know,” added the Irmo golfer.
Liebler and Joyner were playing in the last group with first round leaders Walt and Thomas Todd. The Todds had posted an outstanding opening round score of 7-under par 65 to lead Liebler and Joyner by four shots.
The first round leaders did not have the same amount of success in the second round and got off to a difficult start making the turn at 1-over par.
Liebler and Joyner eagled the third hole in the final round to pull closer to the leaders and added a birdie on the seventh hole.
“We had some other chances, but we missed some short ones on the front,” said Joyner.
At the turn the Todds still had the lead, but a good up and down for par on the tenth hole seemed to change the momentum of the round for Liebler and Joyner.
“I think that was the turning point for us. We made a nice save there and then strung a couple of birdies together to put us in position,” said Liebler.
Liebler and Joyner added birdies on number 13 and 14 to move past the Todds, but there were other golfers ahead of them that had also stepped up their play in the final round.
Walter Todd of Laurens and Chris Mitchell of Columbia followed up an opening round 1-under par 71 with a 4-under par 68 to temporarily hold the lead in the clubhouse.
The team of Kyle Milner and Tim Pope from Spartanburg opened the tournament with the same 1-under par 71. They would shoot a second round 5-under par 67. The team picked up the last shot when Milner birdied the final hole to take a short-lived lead.
Liebler was the last player to putt in the final group and drilled the birdie putt in the center of the hole. His partner gave most of the credit for the win to his outstanding play.
“Steve was just so solid all day,” said Joyner. The winning team posted rounds of 69 and 68 for a 137 total and a one shot victory over Milner and Pope. The team of Walt and Thomas Todd finished in a third place tie with Chris Mitchell and Walter Todd.
Liebler will join the late Bob Boyd as 2017 inductees into the South Carolina Golf Association Hall of Fame in January.
The Senior title at Musgrove Mill was won by the team of Bill Gee and Jim Nix. the two Spartanburg County golfers finished with a 143 total to win by two shots. the team of Mark Souza and Mike Gravley, Ralph Ireland and Tripp Kulke tied for second place.
