Kevin Roberts started his round with a bogey and Hunter Fry ended his round with a bogey.

In between, each golfer carded six birdies to share the lead after the first round of the Spartanburg County Amateur at the Carolina Country Club.

Roberts, a two-time county champion, posted three birdies on each side to post his 6-under par 66. His birdie on the final hole gave him a share of the lead.

Fry, a USC Upstate golfer, was 4-under par on the front nine. If he could have avoided the final hole bogey he could have a one shot lead instead of being tied at the top.

A field of 116 golfers in the championship division braved the extremely hot temperatures in the first round of the championship presented this year by Delaney’s Irish Pub, R.J. Rockers and Budweiser of Spartanburg.

Dan Constantino and George Eubank Jr. both shot rounds of 3-under par 69 to be tied for second place.

Matt Wilson and Kyle Owings are one shot behind in a tie for fifth place.

Kevin McGrain shot a 1-under par 71 to lead the Tournament Division.
