Kevin Roberts broke out of a first place tie with Hunter Fry after the second round of the Spartanburg County Amateur at the Carolina Country Club.
Roberts and Fry started the second round at 5-under par, but Fry had a rough start carding three straight bogeys to start the day.
Fry got one shot back from par with a birdie on the fourth hole, but Roberts also birdied the hole to keep a three shot advantage.
Roberts made the turn at 1-under par and shaved another shot on the back nine to finish with a second round 70 for a two-day total of 137.
Fry suffered a double bogey on number 11. He birdied two of his final three holes to keep Roberts from getting to far in front of the field.
The USC Upstate golfer finished at 1-over par making the difference between first and second place the three bogeys he suffered to start the day.
The tournament is presented by First Tee Upstate with proceeds going to the youth golf program. This year Delaney’s Irish Pub, R.J. Rockers and Budweiser of Spartanburg are sponsoring the three county championships staged by the First Tee.
Nelson Dickson matched Roberts 70 for the low round of the day. His 2-under par score moved him up into a tie for third place with George Eubank Jr. at 3-under par.
Dan Constantino is fifth with Carter Davis in sixth place.
Zach Phillips and Matt Wilson are tied with former champion Robbie Biershenk for seventh place. The three golfers are at even par going into the final round on Sunday.
Kevin McGrain maintained his lead in the Tournament Division by 3-shots over Travis Blackwell.
The leaders are set to tee-off at 2pm on Sunday.
