#1 Gamecocks finish 13th at NCAA Finals

The Gamecocks attempted comeback from last place to make the top-eight and advance to match play ended when South Carolina shot a final round 5-over par and finished in 13th place.

After going 24 over par in the first round and in last place the Gamecocks battled back to make the cut and be within striking distance of the final eight.

Even a hole-in-one by Ana Pelaez could not help the Gamecocks make up the 6-shots they needed to extend their season.

“Heart and resilience is the way I would describe this team,” said Gamecock coach Kalen Anderson on Gamecock twitter. “We fell a little short coming back from that first day, but we put ourselves in the mix, all the way up to today,” she said.

The Gamecocks were trying for the last qualifying spot for match play, but instead of closing in on the position South Carolina went in the other way after shooting a team total of 5-over par.

The Gamecocks highest ranked player Pauline Roussin-Bouchard , who shot an 81 in the opening round to help put the Gamecocks in a big hole, finished the tournament just about 100 places better than she started.

Roussin-Bouchard shot a final round 2-under par 70 to move up into a tie for 20th place. After starting at 9-over par the Gamecock sophomore finished at 3-over par.

Instead of focusing on the disappointing performance in the National Championship, Anderson reflected on the entire season.

“We’ve had an excellent season, had a couple of down turns here at the end , but thats the game of golf. It doesn’t take away from the awesome season we had. We have a great group of young ladies and I’m proud to have coached them,” said Anderson.

The Gamecocks were not the only highly ranked team to be left out of the final eight. 3rd ranked LSU and 4th ranked Wake Forest also missed the cut.

Stanford’s Rachel Heck led from start to finish to win medalist honors.

The Quarterfinal natch ups are #1 Stanford vs #8 Arizona, #2 Duke vs #7 Arizona St, #3 Oklahoma State vs #6 Auburn, #4 Ole Miss vs #5 Texas.
