Vanderbilt had three individual golfers shoot rounds of even par 70 and holds a 2-shot lead over Auburn and Oregon after the first round of the NCAA Championship at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.
The Commodores carded a 2-over par 282 to hold the 3-shot lead over the Tigers and the Ducks.
Georgia is tied for 11th, nine shots behind the leader, but well within the top 15 they will need to keep playing after 54 holes.
The Bulldogs’s Trent Phillips from Inman, finished the first day at 1-over par 71 and is tied for 16th individually.
Gamecock Evans Lewis, playing as an individual, finished with a 5-over par 75. His round included a triple bogey and he enters the second round tied for 82nd.
The College of Charleston had a difficult first day. The Cougars finished at 25-over par for a 305 total and a tie for 27th place.
