Palmetto State golfers are a day away from some big wins.
Last year every thing fell right into place for Furman’s Anna Morgan. This year the Lady Paladin senior has been playing well, but hasn’t gotten much out of her rounds.
That changed on Monday as Morgan opened with a 66 and followed it up with a solid 70 to take a 2-shot lead into the final round at a tournament with a ridiculously long name being played at the Jacksonville Country Club in Florida.
Morgan has a two shot lead over freshman teammate Chloe Johnson. Johnson matched Morgan’s 66 in the first round and carded a second round 72 for 138 total.
The Lady Paladins as a team are in second place, but Sam Houston State has 13 shot lead.
Final round on Tuesday morning.

Gamecocks in control at the Palmetto Club

The Gamecocks home away from home is just about an hour drive from Columbia.
South Carolina enters the final round of the Cleveland Golf, Palmetto Intercollegiate with a 7-shot lead over Wisconsin at the Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken.
The score sounds like the Gamecocks had a comfortable lead, but getting there meant staging a couple of rally’s during the first and second round to lead going into play on Tuesday.
“We rallied late in both rounds today, and I’m really proud of the guys for staying patient out there,” said head coach Bill McDonald. “Palmetto was tough and tricky today. We didn’t putt particularly well either round, but a few fell at the end. We are looking forward to the final round tomorrow.”
The top Gamecock score was turned in by Nathan Franks.
The USC sophomore from Spartanburg stands at 4-under par and one shot in front of teammate Rafe Reynolds.
The Gamecocks have won the event 6 times including last year.
Furman is the next best finisher from among teams from our area.
The Paladins trail the leader by 10 shots.
Freshman Harris Barth shot a second round 66 and is 3-shots behind leader Tobias Jonsson.
The Paladins are 6th and Barth is also tied for sixth.

Clemson struggles at Wake Forest Invitational
Last year, without their best player (Jacob Bridgeman) who was qualifying for the PGA Canada Tour, the Tigers ran away with the team win.
They placed two Clemson golfers, Zach Gordon and Colby Patton as the individual champions of the event played on the legendary Pinehusrt #2.
This year none of the Clemson starters finished the first two rounds in the top-30 and only Thomas Higgins, playing as an individual finished in a tie for 20th.
UNC Greensboro and Virginia are tied for the lead lead. Both teams shot two round totals of 4-over par.
