Early in the week Anderson swept up all the annual awards from the South Atlantic Conference, and then they swept the top spots in the conference championship on the course.
The Anderson Trojans are the number 1 team in NCAA DII and the SAC champions after running away with the conference championship.
The Trojans won the conference title by 23 shots. Lenoir Rhyne finished second but none of the teams in the conference really could even come close to matching the Trojans play.
“So excited for this men’s team!” said Anderson Director of Golf Danny Neal. “Seven wins in a single year with the last one being the SAC Championship! What a team effort! Has been all year! I couldn’t be prouder of this group! Now it’s on to regionals!” said the coach.
After the three days of the championship the folks who give out the awards look a lot smarter for making DeCastro the freshman of the year and Reece Coleman, the player of the year.
The freshman grabbed the individual lead in the tournament and never gave it up.
DeCastro finished at 9-under par. The closest golfers to him were teammates Coleman and Keever who tied for second place, 3-shots behind the winner.
“What a special event for Dro! Winning the SAC Championship low medalist as a freshman,” said his very happy coach.
The team had already figured to be in the NCAA Championship, but with the conference title Anderson receives the conference ‘automatic bid to continue playing.
