If your not making birdies in a Korn-Ferry tournament you are losing ground.
The Tour is full of players who can, in any round, take it deep, you don’t have to be one of the top players to put a big dent in par.
In the first round of the BMW Charity Pro-Am Presented by TD Synnex the 143 rd ranked player on the Tour became the ninth player in the Tour’s history to finish a round under 60.
Michael Feagles made 12 birdies with six pars for his tournament leading 59 on the Thornblade Club par 71 course.
“I really can’t believe it,” he said. “I’m as blown away as all of you,” Feagles said.
The Illinois grad (playing the front nine last) made 5 straight birdies including draining a 40 footer that dropped in the side door to finish at 59.
Feagles turned pro in 2021 and by his own admission had never even gotten a sniff at a 59, his best score ever was a 64.
“If you looked at my scores of late you would not see me doing this, I finally feel like I’m putting it together and obviously I pieced it together today,” said Feagles.
If you think his 59 left the field way behind you would be wrong.
Josh Teater shot a 10-uder par 62 at Carolina and David Skins shot a 10-under par 61 at Thornblade.
“It felt for the entire round I was hitting it exactly where I was supposed to hit it. I can’t think of a single shot where I was like, ‘oh, that’s no good.’ Just all day right where I wanted to be and just kept making putts, making birdies, which was the momentum,” said the first round leader.
106 of the 160 Korn-Ferry Pros shot under par for the first round.
Among notables in the field, Korn-Ferry Tour points leader Ben Kohls finished tied for seventh with the 2023 NCAA individual champion Fred Biondi and three other golfers all are at 7-under par.
