It will be youth and enthusiasm versus age and experience as the final round of the South Carolina Golf Association Amateur championship tees off at Musgrove Mill on Sunday morning.
Greenville’s Rafe Reynolds brings the youthful enthusiasm of a college golfer to the final round, while Spartanburg’s Todd White, who won the state title in 1990 more than a decade before Reynolds was born, clearly has the edge on experience.
Reynolds, who plays on the South Carolina golf team, has shot rounds of 68 68 and a third round 69 to hold a one-shot lead over White.
White, the Spartanburg High School golf coach, held or shared the lead for a few holes before Reynolds carded three straight birdies late in the round.
“I got off to a slow start today,” Reynolds said. “But I just kind of stayed patient and made three straight birdies on 15 16 and 17 which was pretty much the difference of the whole round,” he said.
White, who was inducted into the SCGA Hall of Fame last January, only had one bogey on the day to shoot a 3-under par 69,for a 10-under par 205 total.

The two will be in the final grouping with Garland Ferrell of Greenville.
The two-time Greenville County Amateur champion is close enough to the leaders to make a move up if they falter.
Ferrell shot a third round 1-over par 73 to be tied with first round leader Chandler Mulkey from Johns Island for third place.
The best round of the day was turned in by defending champions Zach Adams. The USC golfer shot a 4-under par 68.
The field was cut at `10 over par and 65 golfers advanced to play the final two rounds.
The leaders will tee off at 9:40.
The 2023 winner will join 1994 champion Mark Swygert and 2008 champion Lee Palms of Greenville as state amateur titliest at M usgrove Mill Golf Club.
