Just a note to junior golfers for this summer.
If you are leading a tournament, you better have more than a 2-shot lead if Will Ruth is playing behind you.
The Dorman High School sophomore did it again.
A few weeks ago Ruth made an eagle on the final hole to come from behind and win the Southern Cross Invitational at the Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken.
At the AAAAA Championship played at The Country Club of Lexington, Ruth trailed the leader, Chase Cline from Chapin, by two shots with only the final hole to play.
This time when he eagled the par 5 18th it earned Ruth a spot in a playoff with Cline.
“It is pretty amazing in two tournaments to eagle the final hole,” said Ruth. “At Aiken I kind of went crazy when I made the eagle, this time I was more in control,” he said.
Ruth and Cline went to a playoff for the individual championship and eveyone left at the course followed the playoff.
“When I looked down the fairway there were people everywhere, I thought I was at the US Amatuer,” he said.
Both golfers were even after the first hole and on the second hole Ruth thought he had an advantage.
“I was on the green and he was off the green and had a really tough up and down. He made a great shot and we had to play another hole,” said Ruth.
On the third playoff hole, Ruth ripped a hybrid down the middle of the fairway on the short par 4. His second shot ended up 15 feet from the hole.
Cline was off the green and pitched up, but when Ruth made his birdie putt he had won his second big tournament in a row.
The two wins and the way he has won both events has gotten the young golfer noticed as one of the up and coming players in the state,.
” People know about me now and know that I can compete with anybody and I’m not just a middle of the field golfer,” he said.
Ruth is looking forward to playing this summer and it starts with the SCJGA Match Play championship at the exclusive Congaree Club near Ridgeland.
“I think if I can get a few more things dialed in this summer I can do some big things,” said the new South Carolina AAAAA High School champion.
