Some interesting story lines are taking shape at the South Carolina Amateur championship being played at the County Club of Charleston,

USC golfer Zach Adams takes a three shot lead into the weekend.

Adams has posted two rounds of 7-under par 64.

On Thursday he did it without a bogey and in the second round on Friday he carded two bogeys, but shot the same score by making 9 birdies.

Adams already owns a SCGA Amateur title winning the 2022 championship on another demanding course at the Dunes Club in Myrtle Beach,.

The competition closest to the 2022 South Carolina Golf Association champion is one of the youngest and certainly the oldest players in the field.

The SCGA has a tradition of placing the defending Amateur champion, Junior champion and Senior champion for the first two rounds of the tournament together.

The three-some included Greenville’s Yancey Johnson who won the state senior earlier this summer. The Greenville golfer turned in two solid rounds shooting an even par 71 and a 2-under par 69 to be in a tie for 17th.

Johnson’s two playing partners, Junior Champion Chase Cline from Chapin, one of the youngest players in the field, shot a second round 7-under par 65 to hold second place.

The future Western Carolina golfer made two eagles in his round.

The third member of the special group has confirmed legendary status in South Carolina golf after his win in the British Senior Amateur two weeks ago,

Defending amateur champion Todd White, the 56 year old Spartanburg teacher and coach, had the best round of the day putting an 8-under par 63 on his scorecard.

He moved up into a tie for third place with Matthew Doyle from Summerville.

If you don’t know much about South Carolina golf history, White won his first SCGA Am after his All-American career at Furman in 1990.

Last year at Musgrove Mill, 33 years later, White who was inducted into the South Carolina Golf Association Hall of Fame in the same year won his second state Am.

Between SC Amateur titles, White was a Walker Cup choice in 2013 and teamed with Nathan Smith to win the first USGA Four-ball championship in 2015.

Adding to White’s now legendary play, he followed up the state am with a win in the USGA Senior Amateur and after 36 holes he is in position to compete for a third state amateur title.

Adams, Cline and White will compose the final pairing of the third round teeing off at 9:40 am on Saturday.

The cut for this year’s championship was made at 4-over par as 56 golfers will play the weekend.

Making the cut for the final two rounds included five former champions.

In addition to Adams and White, Austin Reeves who won the 2011 championship at Colleton River tied for 17th, Lee Palms, who won the 2008 championship at Musgrove Mill, tied for 26th and Jeff Goff, the winner of the 2006th championship at the Palmetto Club tied for 33rd.
