
Three of the five golfers from South Carolina who made match play at the USGA Senior Amateur have advanced to the round of 32.
Defending champion Todd White from Spartanburg, won his match with Curtis Holck 5&4. The high school teacher and golf coach will now face Todd Burgan.
The Knoxville golfer is a six time state champion in Tennessee and is in his first senior amateur championship.
Tim Dunlavey from The County Club of Spartanburg advanced to the final 32 with a 4&3 win over Jeff Frazier. He will next face Geoff Elliott in the round of 32.
Rock Hill’s Rick Cloninger also won his opening match with an impressive 5&3 win over Gregg Sanders and will next play Rick Elliott.
SCGA Senior champion Yancey Johnson and Spartanburg County Senior champion Max Fain were both knocked out of the competition in the opening round.
Johnson lost a 3&2 match to Paul Smith.
Fain was topped by the defending champion in the Chanticleer National Senior Invitational, played at the Greenville Country Club,
Matt Sughrue earned a 3&2 win over the Boiling Springs senior.
Ageless Paul Simson, from Raleigh, the Carolinas winningest amateur, lost his first round match. It was the first time in 15 USGA Senior Amateur championships that the 2 time national champions had been knocked out of the event in the opening round.
