A little over a week ago the Daniel Lions won the Lady Hurricane tournament at Southern Oaks. It was a good win over a solid field.
This week the Lions won their second event with a win at The Jack Invitational played at Cross Creek Plantation.
Daniel’s performance wasn’t their best of the year, but it was exactly what coach Andy Swords asked his team for before the event began.
“I told them we didn’t have to play perfect,” said the Daniel coach, “but I wanted them to play steady and our team did,” said the coach.
Daniel didn’t have a single member of the All-Tournament team and the scores might look a little high for a winning team, but the Lions played a steady, not perfect round and won the tournament over Blue Ridge just as they did at Southern Oaks.
It was closer this time between the two upstate rivals as Daniel shot a 363 total to edge the Tigers by a shot.
Individually, Ansley Bryson from Seneca claimed medalist honors carding an even par 74 for the win.
With the High School League realignment this year, the Daniel win at The Jack might have had a little more significance than their win at the Wren tournament.
“You look at the scoreboard and the top four teams are now all in our region. Last year we were AAA and now us and Seneca and Blue Ridge and Pickens are all AAAA and we are going to have a heck of a region tournament in a few weeks,” said Swords.
Most of the top girls teams in South Carolina will be playing in the High School Invitational at Moss Creek Plantation near Hilton Head this weekend.
The event is presented by the Women’s South Carolina Junior Golf Foundation in association with 13 time LPGA Tour champion Rosie Jones, a resident at Moss Creek.
A number of LPGA Tour Legends will play in a fund raising pro-am and spend time mentoring the high school players.
Daniel and several of the other teams in the event will come back from Hilton Head and pick up a jam packed schedule to finish the regular season and get ready for the Region tournament.
The Walker Course at Clemson will host the region on October 14th and then the Upper State AAAA qualifying tournament will be played at Willow Creek on October 21st.
“We have only one senior on a very young team and the experience we are getting playing and winning will certainly help us at the end of the year, but with so many good teams in our classification we hope we can keep playing steady,” said Swords.
In the AAAA Classification the team from May River is considered the favorite to repeat as champions. The Sharks are having an outstanding season.
Earlier in September May River hosted a tournament at Hilton Head which included almost all of last year’s state champions and won the event by 10 shots.
“There is no question they will be the team to beat in the tournament, but for now I am pleased our team is playing steady and if we keep playing that way get a top-five finish. As young as we are that would be a great finish to the season and something to build on for next year,” concluded the Daniel coach.
