Next stop Clemson for Greenville’s Tip Price

Greenville’s Tip Price fulfilled a lifetime dream. He always wanted to play college golf at Clemson. The young golfer kept his early commitment to Clemson and signed his National Letter of Intent early on Wednesday morning. (GolfClub Photo)

November 13th is the NCAA National Signing day for all sports other than football. Greenville’s Tip Price had his paper work ready waiting for the clock to get to 7 AM, the earliest a National Letter of Intent could be signed.

” I signed mine at 7 and sent it in at 7:05. I can’t wait to get to Clemson and start playing college golf,” he said.

Tip Price has been a player to watch even before he won the Drive Chip and Putt contest at Augusta National. He came up through the South Carolina Golf Association Junior program and excelled at every age group level.

Price was just in the fifth grade when he won. The win at the home of The Masters solidified him made him a player to watch growing up.

The Greenville High School golfer recalled the experience of playing at Augusta as one of the big thrills of his young life.

Price remembers a questionnaire he filled out at the time.

“One of the questions was where did I want to be in five or ten years? I put down I wanted to be playing college golf at Clemson,” he recalled

Price made his commitment to Clemson on signing day last year.

Even after committing to the Tigers other schools kept recruiting Price and he took advantage of their interest to see what other top programs had to offer.

He took visits to Florida State, Georgia, North Carolina and a few others.

“I knew Clemson was the place for me, but I wanted to make sure. I knew I made the right choice after the visits.” he said.

Price will play his final year of high school golf starting after the holidays and is as enthusiastic about his Greenville High School team almost as much as he is about signing with Clemson.

“We are going to have a really good team. It is going to be deep and I want this to be a great year,” for the team.

The Red Raiders team will include two other golfers who signed to play college golf.

Price’s long time teammate, Hugh Faulkner signed with Anderson and the other senior Parker Homesley will play college golf at North Greenville.

With a high school schedule ahead Price is making sure he carves out enough practice time to keep improving. There are a couple parts of his game he wants to strengthen before starting school next fall.

“I have always been able to hit the ball a long way. What we are working on is the shot dispersal. I want to get that down before I go there next summer,” he said.

Price works with the same instructor at Sea Island as his future teammate Jackson Byrd.

Byrd also signed on to play at Clemson on the first day of the signing period.

Byrd is the son of 5 time PGA TOUR winner Jonathan Byrd, a Clemson grad and the nephew of Clemson coach Jordan Byrd.

Last year at this time Price, in effect, took himself off the market making an early commitment to Clemson.

“I thought committing early last year would help me play better during the high school season.I didn’t have as good a season as I wanted so I’m looking forward to playing much better this year,” he said.

The South Carolina High School League realignment this year has bumped the Red Raiders up to the 5A big school classification. Instead of trying to get by AC Flora, a perennial power in AAAA golf, now Greenville will be in the same classification as TL Hanna the two time defending champions.

“I know we may have the best team I have played on this year. I know we are going to do better than in the past. I think it is going to be fun year,” concluded Price.
