The Lake Lure community springs forward

Lake Lure and the nearby communities have healed most of the scares from the storms of 2024 as the lake is being refilled

Every place you look you see signs that one of the Carolinas’ most unique mountain golf destinations is feeling like itself again.

At Rumbling Bald on Lake Lure, the recovery from the storms that swept through western North Carolina more than a year ago has taken a different path than many might expect.

Rumbling Bald was able to return to golf operations relatively quickly — a combination of good fortune, experienced staff, and a willingness to get to work immediately.

“The other end of the lake took the brunt of the damage,” one staff member noted. “We were fortunate, but there was still plenty to do.”

It was all-hands-on-deck, as staff members moved quickly to restore the golf courses, and within a short time, play resumed with only minor adjustments. From a golf standpoint, Rumbling Bald never really left.

What lingered longer was perception.

Social media reports in the months following the storm painted a picture that didn’t always match reality. In truth, Rumbling Bald quietly put together a strong year, even as the broader region continued its recovery.

Now, with Lake Lure itself returning to form — including the long-awaited refill process now underway — there is a noticeable shift in energy across the area.

“That’s lifted everyone,” said Mark Eades, speaking for Rumbling Bald. “The lake has always been at the heart of this place. As it comes back, so does the spirit of the community.”

Golf Never Stopped — Now It’s Getting Better

While much of the conversation has centered around the lake and the surrounding community, the golf operation at Rumbling Bald has quietly taken a step forward.

With the immediate recovery behind them, attention has shifted fully back to the courses — and that’s where superintendent Lance Allen and his team have made their mark.

Allen, a longtime veteran with deep experience in the Carolinas, has approached the property with a clear focus on playability and long-term turf health. Over the past several months, that has meant everything from aggressive aerification and turf management to targeted tree removal and course improvements designed to enhance both conditions and shot values.

“One thing stands out to me more than anything,” Allen noted in his seasonal report. “That one thing is playability.”

On the Bald Mountain Course, that philosophy is already visible. Selective tree removal on several holes has opened up sightlines, improved sunlight and airflow, and made the course more enjoyable for the average player without taking away its character. Plans for bunker adjustments and expanded teeing areas continue that approach.

At Apple Valley, improvements to infrastructure — including cart path updates and long-term drainage and grading projects — are aimed at keeping the course both playable and sustainable well into the future.

Much of this work happens quietly, often early in the morning or during slower periods, but it shows up where it matters most — in the condition of the golf courses.

A Destination Experience Returning to Full Strength

For many golfers, Rumbling Bald has always been

more than just two courses.

It’s the combination — mountain golf, lake views, on-site lodging, and a setting that feels removed from everything else without being difficult to reach. That full experience took a hit when the lake itself was impacted, even as the golf remained strong.

Now, with the lake returning, those pieces are coming back together.

Boat rentals, lakeside events, weddings, and the kind of relaxed downtime that defines a mountain golf trip are all part of what makes Rumbling Bald different. As those elements return, so does the overall experience that has made it a favorite for Carolina golfers for decades.

And for golfers who may have hesitated in the past year, there’s a simple reality waiting for them:

The golf is ready.

The Apple Valley Course continues to offer its wide fairways and sweeping views, while Bald Mountain — highlighted by its iconic par-3 16th played across a rocky cove — remains one of the most memorable rounds in the region.

The Right Time to Return

Rumbling Bald has also leaned into the moment, offering spring packages designed to bring golfers back to the mountains while supporting the broader recovery of the Lake Lure area.

It’s an invitation that feels both timely and genuine.

For those who have been before, it’s a chance to return to a place that still feels familiar, now with a little extra energy behind it. For first-time visitors, it’s an opportunity to experience one of North Carolina’s most scenic golf settings as it comes back into full stride.

After a year and a half of recovery, the message is no longer about rebuilding.

It’s about moving forward.

And at Rumbling Bald, that forward momentum is easy to see — in the condition of the courses, in the return of the lake, and in the steady confidence of a place that never lost sight of what it does best.
