Carter keeps the lead in Spartanburg

Matt Carter was a co-leader after the first round, but after 36 hole at the Spartanburg County Amateur being played at the Carolina Country Club he has the top of the leader board to himself.

The former USC Upstate golfer shot a 2-over par 74 to go along with his first round 4-under par 68 for a two-day total of 142 and a one shot lead over current Spartanburg Junior champion Daniel Brasington and Evan Edwards.

Carter played his first 28 holes without a bogey but on his second hole in the second round he carded a double bogey and took another bogey on the fifth hole to make the turn at 3-over par 39.

On the back nine Carter bogeyed one more hole, but was able to make two birdies including one on the 18th hole that turned out to be the shot he needed to hold the lead.

First round co-leader Ely Cornwell struggled to a 5-over par 77 and dropped back into a tie for seventh with future Coastal Carolina golfer Garrett Cooper.

Brasington improved from third place to second by also shooting a 2-over par 74. His round included five bogeys and three birdies to enter the final round one shot behind Carter.

Edwards birdied his final two holes to shot an even par 72 and tie Brasington.

The best round of the day was turned i by Cody Frye who shot a 3-under par 69 to move up into a 3-way tie for 13th place.

Former champion Kyle Milner, Jonathan Thomas and Max Fain are in a tie for fourth place and trail the leader by tewo shots going into the final round on Sunday.
