If they had worn uniforms it could have looked like a college golf tournament at the Upstate Team championship played at Legacy Pines.
Current and former North Greenville University golfers took a 1-shot lead into the final round over a team of USC Upstate golfers with a couple of golfers with Limestone ties in the hunt
Bo Upton and Miller Harbin opened the 36 hole team tournament with an 11-under par 61 to lead Sam Merrell and Zander Briggs.
Neither team had much breathing room as three other duos were just a shot back after shooting 63s in the opening round.
“We chipped in for a birdie on a par-5 in the first round and that was about the only difference between us and everyone else,” said Upton.
In the second round it was the Crusaders matched up with the Spartans in the final group when the Saint’s team entered the fray.
Limestone connected golfers Wes Reeves and Zach Bishop, playing in a group in front of the leaders, were making a run for the top spot.
The two carded the best round of the tournament shooting a 13-under par 59 and then had to wait to see if the last two groups could better their score.
“We knew we had a two shot lead at the turn so it did kind of seem like match play the rest of the way,” said Harbin.
The leaders had a close call on the 13th hole. They had to play from the woods off the tee, but their punch out left them in good position and they were able to salvage a good par save to keep their lead.
“We ham and egged it around both days. When one of us had some trouble the other always seemed to be able to pull off a shot,” said Upton.
The North Greenville golfers, who also happened to be high school teammates at Blue Ridge, shot a final round 12-under par 60 for a 2-day total of 121.
Reeves and Bishop finished a shot back while Briggs and Merrell along with Benji McCall and Duane Barnes tied for third place.
Steven Tedstone and Steven Reid tied with Mike and Perry Hartin for fifth place at 126.
Flight winners included; First Flight – Yancey Johnson and Dharmik Nalk, Second Flight – Kyle Fetterly and Carson Joye.
