Top ranked teams are on top of state championships after first round

The South Carolina High School Golf coaches last ranking of state teams in each of the five classifications seem to be pretty close to what took place in the first round of the state championships at four sites around the state.

Boiling Springs, AC Flora and Christ Church all carried the top ranking in their classification into the state championship.

Only 3rd ranked Woodruff was able to get past a pair of higher ranked teams in the AAA championship.

The top ranked team in the SC Golf Coaches Poll all year has been Boiling Springs and the Bulldogs are on the top of the first round at the AAAAA championship.

Boiling Springs shot an opening round 5-over par 293 to hold an 8 shot lead over Fort Mill and Dorman, two of the other top ranked teams in the classification.

The Bulldogs were led by Zach Phillips who shot a 1-under par 71 and got help from Andrew Gregory who finished his first round at even par.

Individually future Gamecock golfer Nathan Franks has the individual lead. The Cavalier senior shot a 3-under par 69 to hold a 1-shot lead over Major Lenning from Mauldin and Bryce Wittmer from Fort Mill.

AAAA Championship at Dolphin Head Golf Club on Hilton Head, Island

The top ranked AAAA team in the SC Golf Coaches Poll and the perennial favorite AC Flora has the lead after the first round of the championship.

Flora shot a 6-over par round of 294 to hold a 9 shot lead over Greenville.

Beaufort is in third place and has the individual leader.

Jerry Bruns shot a 3-under par 69 to hold the top spot with Trey Crenshaw from Lancaster 1 shot back.

Greenville’s Hugh Faulkner and Flora’s Guy Buffum each shot 1-under par 71s to be in a tie for third place. Mason Kucia from Indian Land is alone in fifth place.

AAA Championship at Three Pines Country Club in Woodruff

It took a year for Woodruff to lead the AAA championship, but the Wolverines have an impressive 10-shot lead over the two teams ranked higher than Woodruff in the SC Golf Coaches Poll.

Woodruff was scheduled to host last year’s AAA state championship at Three Pines Country Club, but the pandemic cancelled the season.

The Wolverines opened the 36 hole championship on their home course shooting a 5-under par first round to hold the big lead over Bishop England. The Bishops have won the last two AAA championships.

Oceanside from Mount Pleasant is in third place 12-shots behind the Wolverines.

Individually future Wofford golfer Daniel Brasington from Woodruff has the lead by a shot over Adam Scott from Bishop England.

Brasington shot a 4-under par 68 to hold the lead going into the final round. His teammate Gage Howard is alone in third place at 2-under par 70.

Three Christ Church golfers shot under par rounds to lead the Cavaliers to a comanding lead at the AA Championship being played at the Newberry Country Club.,

Christ Church’s WIlliam Jennings shot a 3-under par 69 to hold the individual lead by a shot over teammate Jack Wofford who shot a 2-under par 70 and he has a 1-shot lead over another teammate Walker Jennings who shot a 71.

Christ Church posted a 285 total to lead Central Pageland by 34 shots going into the final round.
