After the first round of the NCAA championship the Number 1 ranked Gamecocks are last, last in a field of 24 teams.
The Gamecocks are 23 shots behind first round leader 17th ranked Texas and 10 shots behind Virginia Tech and UCLA , the two teams tied for the 15th spot where the 54 hole cut will be made.
“Definitely not the start we were looking for here,” said Gamecock coach Kalen Anderson. “There is a lot more golf ahead of us and we are going to have to play with a lot more firepower tomorrow,” said the coach on Gamecock twitter.
Only Paula Kirner was able to finish above 76th place for South Carolina. Kirner is tied for 5th place with 13 other golfers at even par. Rachel Heck from Stanford has the individual lead at 3-under par.
Pauline Roussin-Bouchard was the top ranked individual in the country before the post season, now she is ranked 9th and finished her first round with a 9-over par 81 to be in 120th place.
“The windy conditions in the afternoon really got us and we had few bad breaks. We have a lot of golf in front of us, we get out with an early tee time tomorrow and get after it and dig ourselves out of this hole,” added the coach.
Both the teams in the grouping with the #1 Gamecocks finished in the top-10. #2 Duke is tied for fourth and #3 LSU tied for 8th place after the first round.
The Gamecocks have shown signs that the number one team in the country during the regular season was not playing that way in the post season.
The Gamecocks were knocked out of match play at the SEC Championship in the first round and needed a playoff to win the last spot to advance from their Regional.
