The Red Raiders are rolling right now. Greenville has won their last three tournaments and seem to be getting stronger as the season gets closer to the playoffs.

Greenville followed up a win in the Greenville County championship with a win at the Wren Hurricane Invitational played at Southern Oaks.

The Red Raiders shot rounds of 292 and 295 for a 587 total and a 16 shot victory over Mauldin and the rest of the 21 other teams in the field.

The Red Raiders were again led by Tip Price.

Price earned another trophy with rounds of 68 and 69 for a 137 total to top Greenville County High School Champion Jay Wilkins from Mauldin for medalist honors.

“We have kind of hit our stride,” said Greenville coach Andy Newton. “Tip (Price) played lights out yesterday with the rain and then the slow greens today was tough and he got great support from our younger guys,” he said.

Greenville put three golfers on the All-Tournament team. Joining Price was Hugh Faulkner and Jackson Hill.

It seems as in every tournament the Red Raiders are adding another golfer who can produce a counting score.

“We are feeling really good about the way we are playing. Our scores in the last two tournaments have been among the best we have had in six or seven years,” added Newton.

Price continues to turn in quality round after round to provide Greenville with a dependable score to help build their team’s success.

Many in the field saw their scores go up when some bad weather rolled through. Price didn’t seem to be bothered by the conditions as he grows in his role as the team leader.

“It was soft and it was fun,” he said. “I like being out front to do what I can for the team and helping us get some team wins,” noted Price.

While teams will be completing their region schedules over the next couple of weeks the next big tournament for the top teams and players is the Southern Cross.

The tournament invites the top teams and select individuals to play in the prestigious event at the famed Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken starting on April 29th.

After the Southern Cross, Region championships and Upper and Lower State qualifying tournaments will take place with the state championships set for May 16th in most classifications.
