The best high school golf teams from South Carolina take the weekend off from their regular season to play in the Southern Cross tournament at the legendary Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken.
The format is different than regular high school tournaments, Each team is represented by four golfers instead of five.
The field is not adjusted for different size classifications, all teams regardless of classification play for the same first place prize,
Since the state does not have an all-classification tournament, sometimes the Southern Cross can give a good indication of which team could be the state champion if all the top teams from every classification played in one event.
This year Bishop England has the lead after the first round by 1-shot over Porter-Gaud.
North Augusta, AC Flora and Greenville round out the top five.
Individually, with the ties there are 16 golfers in the top-10
Bishop Engand’s Matthew Teegarden is tied with Richard Anaclerio from Aiken and Campbell Skelly from Porter Gaud all at 1-under par.
Andrew Gregory from Boiling Springs, Hugh Faulkner and Tip Price from Greenville, Ashton Eubanks from River Bluff and Waymon Thomas from Oceanside are all tied for fourth at 1-over par.
