Gregory cruises to Spartanburg County Am title

Andrew Gregory didn’t play particularly well during the 5A state golf championship held in May at Carolina Country Club.

The former Boiling Springs and future Liberty University golfer got a little bit of revenge on the course this weekend.

Gregory fired an 11-under-par three-day total of 205 to win the Spartanburg County Amateur by three shots over Zach Phillips.

“It feels great,” Gregory said. “I’m pretty proud of myself, and I’m really excited.”

Phillips had the first round lead, but it came with a message from his good friend and former Boiling Springs teammate.

“I saw him on the leaderboard after the first day,” Gregory said of Phillips. “I told him ‘I’m on you tomorrow’, and then it happened. It was a lot of fun out there. I had a blast.”

“He did,” Phillips said with a laugh. “We went to Cookout and he was talking junk. But he made it happen. It’s great to see one of your best buddies win like this.”

By the end of Saturday’s round, Gregory had the lead for good. He stretched it out on Sunday despite a charge from last year’s champion, Nelson Dickson. But Dickson faded late and Gregory made birdies on 12, 13, and 14 to stretch the lead to seven shots before giving a couple back down the stretch.

“The last four holes I didn’t play my best,” Gregory said. “I made three bogeys, and one was on the last hole. I got a little nervous, I guess. But all around, it was a pretty solid day.”

Gregory credited a hot putter with the win.

“I think I made five bogeys this week,” he said. “The course was set up good, they moved the tees around and it changed every day. I hit it pretty solid, and I made a lot of putts. I made a couple of bombs, but I birdied a bunch of the par 5s, too”

Josh Gallman and Andrew Hall rounded out the top five. Defending champion Nelson Dickson finished in a tie for sixth with former champion Robbie Biershenk.
