One of the tournaments all Greenville County boys look forward to playing is the Greenville County High School championship. Up until this year the girls teams in the county did not have their own championship.
Blue Ridge High School coach Randy Cisson with the assistance of Eastside High School golf coaches Jeff Ware and Brad Rollins, (who organize the Greenville Boys County Championship) decided it was time for a girls County tournament,
“Girls golf in Greenville is getting better every year,” said Cisson. “We wanted to hold a championship for county kids to compete against each other. The County Boys championship has done a great job of promoting high school golf and winning some bragging rights is fun for the kids too,” said Cisson.
Willow Creek hosted what Cisson believes will become an annual event on the fall girls golf schedule in Greenville.
Mauldin was favored to win the first county title and the Mavericks didn’t disappoint.
Led by future Anderson University golfer Olivia Pellerin, Mauldin took an early lead in the 18 hole championship.
Pellerin, who is the most accomplished high school golfer in the county, last summer added the prestigious title at The Blade Junior to her list of accomplishments.
“I got to four under on the front, i was hitting the ball well and I wanted to keep pushing to see how low I could go,” said Pellerin. I knew I had a chance to shoot my best score ever. I made a couple of bogeys, but I got it back with a birdie on the last hole for my personal best,” she said.
Pellerin’s best included an eagle and broken club. The eagle came on the par 5, 15th hole.
“I hit a driver and hybrid to about 10 feet and made the put,” she recalled.
Good thing she made the green with her second shot because on the 14th hole she broke her 9-iron just about in half.
“I wasn’t mad, I didn’t try to break it, it just broke in the middle of the shaft. I was pretty lucky the rest of the way, I only had one shot that I could have used the nine iron,”she said.
She also was lucky the broken shaft only caused a small cut on Pellerin’s leg.
The 5-under par 67 was not the only personal best carded by a Mauldin golfer.
Both Bre Turner and Lilly Graffius turned in scores better than they had ever shot in a tournament,
“This was the first time with different goups of girls and different teams than we see at some of our tournaments. It was fun to play with them and this being the first one it was fun to win,” said Pellerin,
“its good to know that we are the first ones to win this tournament,” said Mauldin coach Kendall Yapp. “We are excited to win, We knew all our girks had to play a really good round for us to win and they did and we had three personal bests, Our girls got it done,:” said the Mavericks coach.
Joining Pellerin, Turner and Graffius were Remy Reynolds and Bella Bonnert.
The win by the Mavericks may have boosted the teams expectations for the season,
“Our goal was to do better in state than we did last year. We were sixth and we wanted to be at least top-fice. Now maybe we can think about a top-three,” said the coach,
While Mauldin had a comfortable victory margin, Blue Ridge edged out JL Mann by two shots for second place.
The Tigers second place team included Katelyn Cox, Haley Meredith, Ashley Azzaro, Maddison Hipps and Hailey Smith.
After the top three the rest of the field was bunched with only a shot separating the next five teams.,
The All County team (above) included Pellerin and Reynolds from Mauldin, Katelyn Cox from Blue Ridge, Katelyn Cubbison from Southside Christian, Sydney Kulhane from Hillcrest and Zuri Ruiz from Mann.,
