Morgan sets new Furman career win record

When Anna Morgan started the first round of the Landfall Tradition with four straight birdies and made the turn carding a 30 she thought she was going to have a very good week.

Even after posting a five shot win over a field filled with top-ranked golfers Morgan still did not realize what her victory meant in the Furman record book.

“I had no idea until someone told me after the tournament what I had done. I saw something Furman put out and I was shocked,” she said.

Morgan’s win gave her one more tournament title than the Lady Paladin legends, the golfers who established Furman as one of the top women’s programs in the country almost 50 years ago.

Morgan’s sixth college championship is one more than legendary Lady Paladin golfers Beth Daniel, Betsy King, Dottie Pepper and Jennifer Perri totaled in their Furman Hall of Fame careers.

“Everyone who follows women’s golf knows those names as among the best players ever. We have all the trophies and pictures here and to be in a group with those greats is unbelievable,” said Morgan.

Her sixth college victory came after a disappointing trip to the second stage of LPGA Q School.

Morgan did not advance to the final stage and came back to Furman knowing her move to the professional ranks would be a little slower than she expected.

“I was bummed. I knew if I played my best I would have made it, but I didn’t. I wished I could have putted last week like I did this week,” offered Morgan.

Playing professionally is still very much in Morgan’s future, but it will have to wait until the end of this college season.

Morgan will be exempt into events on the Epson Tour and intends to begin her professional career hopefully after another appearance in the NCAA tournament.

This week at the Landfall Challenge Morgan’s win was very different from some of her other victories.

The final round was much like a “walk in the park” for the Lady Paladin golfer from Spartanburg. Rather than a grind to notch a victory on the final hole, Morgan was about as relaxed as can be while still competing,

“I knew I had the lead and I knew i was playing really well, but I was still nervous. I guess I always will be,” she said.

After her fast start in the first round Morgan stumbled to card a double bogey on the back nine. It dropped her into a tie with Michelle Cox of Penn State.

In the second round Morgan shot a 6-under par 66 and pulled away from the field. She opened a five shot lead over the field.

Her second round included a pair of eagles to go along with the birdies to pad her lead.

“My putter wasn’t my friend at Q-School, but we got back together this week and we are friends again. I hit almost everything close and made most of them,” she said.

In the final round several golfers shot great scores, but the five shot lead Morgan had going into the final round was the eventual margin of victory.

With rounds of 66 65 and 69 Morgan’s 202 total at 14-under par topped Taylor Kehoe of Alabama and Annabelle Pancake of Clemson, who tied for second.

“I had a great time this week. I played really well and I had so many family members here with me it felt like a home tournament,” she said,

Instead of chasing some of the invitational holiday tournaments Morgan intends to take a break for the holidays before starting her final semester at Furman.

“I play so much golf during the summer and I don’t take a break so I’m going to enjoy the holidays with my family,” said the new Furman record holder.

After winning the Lady Paladin championship earlier in the fall Morgan said she was having the best semester of her career at Furman on and off the course.

“It has been a great year so far and I’m looking forward to my last semester and enjoying it just as much” concluded Morgan.
