While most of the 42 teams of golfers playing in the Smithfields Tough Days tournament experienced a pair of difficult rounds, the winners looked like they were playing in a Tough Day-Easy Day event.

Brandon Masters and Blake Williamson survived a tough first round, but made the second round of the 36 hole championship look like a walk in the park as the two posted an 11`- under par 61 to win the tournament.

“We played about the same both days,” said Williamson. “We just made all our putts today. for the win,” he said.

The winning team started the final round four-shots behind first round leaders Bernie McShane and Jacob Burgess. The two teamed up for a very solid 8-under par 64 for the first round 1-shot lead over fellow Smithfields Club members Steven Heard and Zach Satterfield..

The Biershenk brothers, (Robbie and Nick) shot an opening round of 67 to trail the leaders by 3-shots and lead Williamson and Masters by one.

“We had one bogey in the round,” said Masters. “We just didn’t get anything in the hole,” he added.

While Williamson and Masters had one bogey, the Biershenk’s carded two bogeys in their first round total.

“We played pretty well and at the time we didn’t think the bogeys were going to be a problem,” said Nick Biershenk “Looking back now after finishing two back, it turned out to be the difference,” he said.

Williamson and Masters second round 11-under par 61 included a pair of eagles. The first one came on the ninth hole and the second eagle was carded on the last hole the two played, number 16 in the shot-gun start format.

The first eagle came when Williamson drained a 30 foot putt. The second eagle turned out to be the winning margin as Williamson only needed a three-foot tap in after a big drive and an accurate wedge.

“We were not certain about the scores and we figured we needed an eagle to have a chance to win,” said Masters. The teams aecond eagle made up the two shot difference for the win.

First round leaders McShane and Burgess posted a 5-under par 67 in the second round to finish tied with the Biershenks’ for second,

Flight winners included First Flight – Matt and Mike Gunn, Second Flight – Cory Taylor and Carlton Cisson, Third Flight – Tyler Croxton and Cason Mabry, Fourth Flight – Eric Boyer and Brian Stone.

The highlight of the winter golf schedule will be in two weeks when Boscobel hosts the annual 3-man team Frostbite Open,

If you were hoping to get a late entry into the event, that ship has sailed. There are over 20 teams on a waiting list for a spot in the sold out field.

The next event on the Upstate weekend schedule is “Smoak the Oaks” at Southern Oaks. It is scheduled for March 16-17th and if the first few winter events are any indication a tournament closer to spring will likely fill up just as fast,

“Smoak the Oaks” entry can be made by calling the Southern Oaks Golf Shop at 864-859-6658
