The eclipse was the big news on the day, but the Greenville Red Raiders made some news of their own on Monday.

The Red Raiders Tip Price carded an even par round to share medalist honors with Christ Church’s Groves Williams who helped the Cavaliers to a second place finish.

The tournament attempted to break the first place tie using a scorecard playoff, but both golfers shot identical rounds and after all the tie breakers were checked, the two finished even to share the individual county title.

“We started out on fire, but slowed down a little towards the end,” said Greenville golf coach David Cattrell. “We had three guys shoot around par and that made the difference,” he said.

The two schools are in different classifications when it comes to state championship tournaments.

The two highly ranked teams have battled each other in several regular season events this year with mixed results.

Christ Church topped Greenville in the pre-season Red Raider Invitational and the recent Green Wave Invitational played at Smithfields.

The difference between the two teams at Thornblade was the outstanding play of two of Price’s teammates.

Hugh Faulkner shot a 1-over par 72 and Parker Homesby was right behind with a 3-over par 74 as both golfers made the All-Tournament team.

“Getting three guys on the All-Tournament team says a lot about the way we played. We are coming into form at the right time. We have a lot of big tournaments ahead of us and a win like this builds confidence,” said the Greenville coach.

Christ Church has been ranked as the top AA-A team in the state while Greenville has been in the top five in the AAAA Classification behind AC Flora from Columbia.

The third place team in the Greenville County Championship was Riverside and the Warriors have been a solid finisher in most events this year.

Riverside shot a solid 309 for third place with JL Mann and Eastside tied for fourth place with Mauldin next.
