From the first tee shot to the last putt Zach Adams was the wire to wire winner of the 93rd South Carolina Amateur Championship.

It was the Gamecock golfers second state title in the last three years.

Adams shot a final round 3-under par 68 to hold off Matthew Doyle from Summerville, who finished two-shots behind Adams.

Adam’s welcomed the victory for what it said about his ability and his expectation for the event being played on his home golf course, the Country Club of Charleston.

“I’m not being cocky or disrespectful, but I believe I was the best player in the field,” Adams said after proving it with his win.

After opening the event at 14 under par Adams allowed the field to think they could catch up when he shot a 1-over par 71 in the third round to have his lead cut to just two shots.

Adams shook off the disappointment and seemed to predict how he expected the final round to go and to win.

“I made bogey on 18, but I’m excited for tomorrow. I know what I’m capable of on this golf course. I play here every day, so I know how many birdies I can make,” he said after his third round.

Adams made four birdies to one bogey to finish the event with a 268 total for a 2-shot advantage over the field just as it was at the start of the round.

The win came over a field including five former champions, several SCGA classification winners, a handful of college golfers and the best amateurs in the state.

One of the players who chased Adams was the defending champion Todd White from Spartanburg,

White, fresh off his win in the British Senior Amateur championship, shot the best round of the tournament on the second day when he posted an 8 under par round of 63 to close in on Adams.

White’s run at the lead ended on Sunday when the 2-time SCGA Amateur champion finished with a 1 over par 72 in 5th place.

Matthew Doyle from Summerville had a roller coaster ride on the final nine holes. Four birdies and three bogeys kept him from getting any closer than within two shots of Adams to finish second.

Greenville’s Jed Dirksen moved into the top three after shooting a 5-under par 66 in the third round and played in the final group,

The former Iowa golfer was one of only two golfers to post all rounds in the 60s, but his final round 2-under par 69 left him four shots back of the leader.

The other golfer with all scores in the 60s was Sam Jackson from West Columbia.

The two-time SCGA Player of the Year finished the tournament with his best round of the event shooting a 5-under par 66 to finish in fourth place.

Adams win is all the more impressive because it happened on his home course where local knowledge can sometimes be affected by the pressure to perform well for the home crowd.

“Playing here didn’t put any pressure on me. I concentrated on my game, but I enjoyed seeing a lot of people I know who came out to see me play,” he said.

Adams second state title has now put his name among some of the very best to play and win the state am.

“To have my name in with Lucas Glove and DJ Trahan and so many more is really special,” said the 2024 champion.

Adams not only won the state am, but with the new qualification process for the US Amateur, state amateur winners are exempt into the national championship.

Adams will have to get his plans together quickly to leave for the championship to be played at Hazeltine National Golf Club, in Chaska, Minn. August 12th – 18th.

“I was so disappointed that I missed it (a U.S. Amateur Qualifying spot) earlier this summer. I felt like I have been playing great all summer. So, it’s good to get over there,” added the 2024South Carolina Amateur Champion.
