Graham wins Upstate Ladies Championship

Kendal Graham had so much fun at the Upstate Ladies Amateur Golf Championship, she didn’t mind playing an extra hole.

It helped that her 37th hole was a birdie for the title.

Graham fired a two-day total of 148 to tie with Debbie Huff, then made a 4 on the Par-5 18th at Woodfin Ridge to claim the win.

“This is a great course, and I love playing it,” the former Pendleton High and current Queens College golfer said. “With the weather the past week, I just tried to kind of play it around where I thought it would be muddy because I knew chipping would be tough. I mostly just played my carry number and didn’t play the roll out much.”

Graham entered the second round a shot behind Huff, with both trailing Taylor Lance, who shot an opening-day 72. Her 74 on Tuesday tied her for low round of the day with Susan Christian. Graham said her tee balls and iron play were the key to her round.

“My irons and my drives were pretty good,” she said. “That’s what I was relying on.”

After heading back to the 18th for the playoff, Graham’s second shot was pin-high to the right of the green, while Huff was short in front. Graham putted from the rough, cozying her ball up to about a foot and a half and knocking it in for the clinching birdie.

“I hit a six-iron,” Graham explained. “I had about 155-160, and I pushed it out a little bit, but I aimed over there. It was the right club for sure. It was downhill, so I just tapped it. I was shaking over that last putt, though, even though it was a foot.”

Graham said she truly enjoyed the spirit of the tournament, in keeping with the organization – Friendship Golf.

“This tournament has been my favorite I’ve ever played,” she said. “I’ve made so many friends. That’s exactly what I play this tournament for.”

Lance finished third (second in the first flight), with Chrissie Spidell, Grace Hall, and Christian rounding out the Top 5.

Defending champion Betty Armbruster and Liz Yacovone each shot 159 to lead Flight 2, while Diane Fortin’s 165 led Flight 3. Christine Ring won Flight 4 at 173, with Janet Oh’s 179 tops in Flight 5. Kim Wolcovieck shot 175 to win Flight 6, Jean Ellis’ 188 took Fight 7, and Sibby Tansill shot 194 to win Flight 8.
