Smotherman leads, Phillips charging at the BMW

Austin Smotherman had 10 birdies on his scorecard when he finished the second round of the BMW Charity Pro-Am Presented by TD Synnex.

Only one bogey slipped in among birdie runs of 6 straight on the front nine and three straight on the back nine for a two stroke lead at the half way point.

The 9 year pro from SMU shot a 62 at Thornblade and a 65 in the first round at the Carolina Country Club to take the lead with a 127 total.

A pair of golfers with local connections made moves up the leader board in the second round.

Former Georgia All-American, Trent Phillips, from Inman, carded his second straight round of 66 to move into the top10.

Phillips started his second round with a bogey, but shot a 6-under par 66 at Carolina Country Club, to go with his 5-under par round at Thornblade.

132 two day total earned Phillips a tie for eighth place 5-shots behind the leader.

The second golfer with ties to the upstate is Bryson Nimmer. The Clemson grad got his first win on the Korn-Ferry tour a couple of weeks ago and is just outside the top-10.

Nimmer’s second round 65 at Thornblade made his two-day total 10 under par. He finish the first 36 holes tied for 12th.

The cut was made at 6-under par.

Other local players who will play in the final two rounds at Thornblade include

Clemson grad Doc Redman is at 8-under par, tied for 28th with USC grad Matt NeSmith and 12 others.

Another USC grad Keenan Huskey from Greenville moved up 18 spots by shooting a 4-under par 67 at Thornblade to finish in a tie with 16 other golfers for 51st including Clemson grad Jonathan Byrd.

Byrd is playing in the tournament 25 years after he earned his first professional win at the 2001 BMW tournament.

The final two rounds are played at Thornblade. Tee times begin at 8 am with the leaders teeing off at 1:50.

The Golf Channel coverage of the third and Sunday’s final round will be live from 5pm to 7pm.

The amateur championships will be decided in their final round on Saturday.

The tournament leader Smotherman and his amateur partner Will Monroe are tied with Brice Lewis and Gregg Short and Sam Anderson and Brook Burkhardt for the lead in the X5 Division.

In the X7 Division Pierceson Cody and his amateur partner Rolf Klam lead the division.

In the celebrity X6 Division pro Tom Whitey and his amateur partner Ryan French lead while in the Celebrity X7 Division Carl Yuan and amateur Ross Butler have the lead.
