Junior tournament honoring longtime golf professional Henry Transou will be played Sept. 26–27 in Gaffney.

Entries remain available for the 15th annual Henry Transou Memorial Junior Classic, scheduled for Sept. 26–27 at Cherokee National Golf Club in Gaffney.

Known simply as “The Henry,” the tournament is open to boys and girls ages 7–18. The entry fee is $180.

The tournament honors Henry Transou, a longtime golf professional whose work at Cherokee National included a special commitment to introducing young players to the game.

“From the day we got here back in 1964, it was always, ‘What can we do to get more juniors in the game?’” said Transou’s son, Billy. “My father wanted all golfers to enjoy the game, but there was a special place for juniors here.”

After Transou died in 2004, the club established the Henry Transou Memorial team tournament. Proceeds from that event have helped support junior golf in Cherokee County, including allowing young golfers to practice with range balls at no charge.

“The club and friends of my father have kept his mission alive,” Billy Transou said.

The junior tournament began in 2011, with Taylor White winning the inaugural event. Since then, several champions have gone on to win other major junior titles and compete in college.

While the overall boys and girls championships are contested by golfers ages 13–18, the tournament also includes divisions for younger players.

Spartanburg’s Nathan Franks won The Henry three times. In 2020, Franks and his sister captured the boys and girls championships.

“We have a sub-junior division because my father always talked about making sure his Pee-Wee golfers could play,” Billy Transou said.

The tournament traditionally attracts a field of approximately 80 to 90 golfers.

“I think the course is in as good a condition as it has ever been,” Transou said. “We are going to have another really good tournament, have great food and give out some really big trophies. Some very good juniors are going to win a golf tournament held in honor of someone who really believed in junior golf.”
