Anyone who knew Jackie Seawell knew that his skill as an instructor was matched by his positive, optimistic attitude—one he passed on to his students.
That spirit was on display at the Jackie Seawell Junior Championship, played in his memory at Cobb’s Glen, where he helped many young golfers get started.
With the remnants of a hurricane threatening the tournament, heavy rain washed out the scheduled first round, and it was uncertain whether the players would get on the course at all.
The Cobb’s Glen crew got the course ready, and the players made the most of their chance to compete.
The Seawell has become a popular stop on the South Carolina Junior Golf schedule, known both for its outstanding course and for the distinctive belts awarded to the winners.
In the boys 16-18 division, Hudson Noll of Indian Land, Bryson McCurry of Greenwood and Alex Weathers of Spartanburg each shot a 2-under-par 70, forcing a playoff.
Weathers was eliminated on the first extra hole, leaving Noll and McCurry to play for the title and the belt. Noll won on the second playoff hole, with McCurry finishing as runner-up.
Davis Thompson of North Augusta won the boys 13-15 division, edging Ian Clark of Irmo by one stroke. Thompson finished at 2-under par.
The youngest golfers were scheduled to play nine holes each day, but with the tournament reduced to one day, the 10-12 division played 18 holes. John Sanabria of Greenville won with a 6-under-par 66, making six birdies and an eagle.
