The Dorman Cavaliers added to their Region II AAAA title by taking the top spot in the Upstate qualifying tournament played at Fox Run Country Club.
“Upper State is a qualifier, its not a championship, but obviously winning it gives us a lot of momentum going into state,” said Dorman coach Lewis Terry.
The Cavaliers shot a 327 total to get the top qualifying spot over Mauldin and Boiling Springs. The Mavs and the Bulldogs each shot 334.
“Our goal was to win the region and make it to state. We have four seniors and that gave us a very solid lineup this year,” said Terry.
Dorman was paced by Natalie Srinivasan who shot a 3 over 75. The Cavalier senior was the runner-up in the state championship last year. Olivia Stanton, Abigayle Hatcher, Audrey Martin and Paige Johnson joined Srinivasan on the top finishing team.
Terry expects the defending champions from Lexington to be the team to beat once again this year, especially playing on their home course.
“We played them in a match this year and they beat us pretty good. We know we have to play very well. We have to eliminate the large numbers and our mistakes. We have a veteran team that has been there before and they know what to do,” said the Dorman coach.
The top individual in the qualifying tournament was Mauldin’s Emily Dunlop. The Maverick’s freshman shot an even par round of 72. She finished two shots in front of teammate Ashley Czarnecki and Boiling Springs golfer Anna Chantapaeng.
“I got off to a really good start and I was three under par by number ten,” said Dunlap. “I hit some bad shots, but I made a birdie on the last hole to get back to even,” she said.
Easley’s Savannah Goodman and Srinivasan each shot 75s to finish in a tie for fourth place.
The teams that advanced to the state championship are
1 Dorman 327, 2 Mauldin and Boiling Springs 334, 4 Easley 338, 5 Greenville 346, 6 Spartanburg 365, Blythewood 376, Hanna 378.
Mikala Duncan of Hillcrest made the state championship as an individual.
