Andrew Novak of Wofford has the individual lead and the Gamecock’s have the lead in the team competition at the Camden Collegiate being played at the Camden Country Club.
Novak, who won the SC Match Play championship last summer to go along with his SC Amateur title in 2014, shot identical rounds of 3-under par to finish the first 36 holes at 6-under par.
USC sophomore Keenan Huskey from Greenville and Gamecock freshman Will Miles from Hilton Head are tied for second place after they both finished at 3-under par.
Wehman Hopke of Furman and Wofford’s Jeremy Grab, who was runner-up last year are tied for fourth place.
The tournament format was 36 holes on Saturday with an 18 hole finish to be played on Sunday.
The USC golf team won the event last year and did not look like a repeat winner after the first round on Saturday. However, in the second round the Gamecocks set a new school record with a 15 under par team total.
The second round effort was led by Scott Stevens and Sean Kelly. Each of the USC golfers shot second round totals of 5-under par 65s.
“It was a great day for us overall and an incredible second round. I’m probably more proud of the way we fought off a tough start in the first round. This team showed some toughness and character today, and I know they are looking forward to tomorrow’s final round,” said USC coach Bill McDonald.
The Gamecocks have a 22 shot lead over the second place team from Wofford. Furman and USC Aiken are tied for third place with scores of 580.
South Carolina is playing the tournament without seniors Matt NeSmith and Will Starke in the lineup. McDonald wanted to give some of his younger players the opportunity to compete in tournament play.
“We had the opportunity to get several of our young players into the tournament and it will be great experience that should help them later this year,” said the USC coach.
