One of the last events of the Junior golf year was completed this weekend at the Cheraw Fall Challenge.

The tournament crowned boys, girls and younger boys champions and also helped a pair of golfers move closer to the 2016 SCJGA Junior Players of the Year Award.

Trent Phillips won the Jay Haas SCJGA Player of the Year award last year and now appears to be in line for the award again this year. Phillips took another step towards winning the top Junior award in South Carolina with a victory at Cheraw.

Phillips trailed Tyler Gray of Lugoff after the first round, but as he has done so often this year played great golf in the final round. The Boiling Springs golfer shot a 5-under par 67 to move past the field and record a 4 shot victory.

The future University of Georgia golfer started the tournament with a 146 point lead over fellow Woodfin Ridge golfer Jacob Bridgeman. The two golfers have won almost everything available to junior golfers in South Carolina this year.

Bridgeman finished in a tie for fourth place with first round leader Gray. Ryan Marter of Columbia and Daniel Azallion of Hilton Head tied for second place with 143 two round totals.

Rafe Reynolds of Greenville won the boys 13-14 year old division title by shooting rounds of 71, 75 for a 146 total. Reynolds won the younger boys division by a shot over Gene Zeigler of Florence, Austin Scott of Daniel Island and Manning Sloop of Rock Hill.

Emily Dunlap of Mauldin held her lead in the girls portion of the tournament to win the title. Dunlap followed up her first round 2-under par 70 with an even par round of 72 for a two shot victory.

South Carolina AAA high school champion Emily Cox of Lancaster finished second with an even par total while Gracyn Burgess of Lexington was third one shot further back on the final leader board.

The race for the Beth Daniel SCJGA Girls Player of the Year Award is even closer than they boys race entering the last events of the season.

Kathleen Sumner of Daniel Island had a 100 point lead over Burgess at the end of October. Sumner finished one place behind Burgess at the Cheraw tournament.

Phillips and Sumner both were winners last year at the final event of the year, The Players Championship at Hartsville Country Club. The two are in position to repeat as champions after the Players tournament.
