Trent Phillips won two matches at the USGA Junior championship, but was not able to advance into the quarter finals.
Phillips won his opening match over Cameron Sisk, a future Arizona State golfer. The SCGA Junior champion had an early 4 up lead.
However, Sisk was able to even the match by the 17th hole when Phillips carded a bogey.
On the 18th hole, with the match on the line, Phillips was able to par the hole while Sisk bogeyed the hole sending Phillips into the round of 32.
The Boiling Springs golfer drew Joshua Armstrong from Australia for his second match. Phillips jumped out to a 3 up lead at the turn, but on the second nine Armstrong reeled off three straight wins on holes 11-13 to square the match.
Phillips once again rallied late in the round to win the 15th hole with a birdie and number 16 and 17 with pars to advance to the afternoon round of 16.
Aman Gupta of Charlotte was the future Georgia golfers opponent in the afternoon. Phillips was never able to capture the lead in the match. Gupta opened a 2 up lead on the strength of a birdie on the fourth hole and a bogey by Phillips on the fifth hole.
Phillips was not able to square the match and Gupta finished off the victory with a birdie on the 17th hole to claim a 2 & 1 win.
Gupta advanced to the quarter finals to match up with Garrick Higgo of South Africa.
Another former SCGA Junior champion, Christian Salzer of Sumter was eliminated in a round of 32 match. The NC State golfer was eliminated by Matthew Wolf from California 7 & 6.
